Chat’s with Mums: Get a small glimpse into what other mums love about mum life and how they keep a happy & positive mindset.
My name is Monique Doy, I am an inbetweenie and plus size fashion blogger at dressingup.co.nz. I have two lovely girls, Willow is 3 and Florence is 17 months. My husband runs the National Youth Theatre Company so our lives are filled with music and fun. We are total theatre nerds and super busy! I started Dressing Up after Florence was born because I couldn’t find anything I wanted to wear in my size and it made me feel terrible! So now I show women of all shapes and sizes what is available to them in the fashion world and make fashion fun again. I absolutely love blogging and I have met some amazing people in the last year.
What’s your favourite thing about being a Mum?
Cuddles. Willow is such a cuddly kid and constantly tells us how much she loves us, it’s so lovely to hear! I also enjoy the solidarity with other Mums who just get what you’re going through – no words required!
What’s the biggest thing you’ve learnt about yourself as a Mum / how have you changed since you became a Mum?
I think after I had Willow I got lost for awhile. I had no idea how all encompassing parenting could be, especially in the beginning when feeding and changing is all you know. I forgot what I liked and what motivated me, and starting the blog really gave me something that was completely mine. It gave me a brain break from being Mummy, and I am a much better more patient mother because I have it.
What’s your favourite way to spend time with your children?
Willow is very into art now, so it’s always fun to draw with her, and Florence is just learning that reading can be fun, so we read a lot. I always love watching them with my husband because they are so much like him! Like the three amigos!
What’s your top tip for keeping happy and positive as a Mum?
Acknowledging that it is really hard and it is hard for everyone. Don’t get wrapped up in the seemingly perfect lives of others, everyone has tough days. Make sure you have plans to look forward to (even if it’s just reading a book on the weekend) and that you have community – other Mums nearby you can visit for a cry when you need to! Remember to treasure your partner first and keep that team strong so you will both have energy for the little people. When the day goes wrong and it’s getting a bit rough, just emotionally write it off and start again tomorrow!
How do you carve out some ‘me time’ into your life?
We are lucky enough to have two fantastic sets of grandparents who are happy to babysit, so every couple of weeks James and I get out for some time together. But as far as ‘me’ time, it’s hard to find! My favourite thing to do is to go shopping with my girlfriends – and then blog about what I bought of course!
Aside from your family, what’s makes your truly happy in life?
Using the blog to help women learn to love themselves and feel great really does get me up in the morning. It’s such a creative job and the connection you feel with your readers is just fantastic. I am very lucky!
